The slums of Madurai
Despite India’s overall economic growth, many families are
still plagued by poverty. Employment in the slums is limited
to street vending or hard labour. In Madurai many children
work from an early age. The need for immediate income
takes priority over getting a proper education. However, if
this ‘cycle’ continues, the population will remain poor and
marginal. Breaking this cycle will help the city and it’s people
to progress, making the future more promising for Madurai.
The Goal: Getting Children to School
The community is now working towards finding ways to
measure the number of children in school, or by helping to
design a campaign about the benefits of education.

Compulsory Education Campaign in full swing
The volunteers and the community leaders in the slums of Madurai,
participated in the Compulsory Education Campaign carried out in
the city slums during the month of April and May.
This campaign was mainly conducted to find out the number of
children in the slums, to motivate the dropouts and child
labourers into the school and also to enrol the eligible
children into the school. Parents were personally met during the
campaign to convince them to send their children to school. When
motivating the dropout children it was assured to support them
to continue their education and to rejoin the school.
Findings
During the month of June, it was found that nearly hundred
children need our support and it was worked out and informed in
this village website by their facilitator Kristin.
Results: Uniforms and Notebooks for School Children
It was so that Selva(New Madurai Foundation Representative),
a neighbour from USA came forward to circulate this information
to many of his friends. One such friend Mr.Shankar, from Sneham
in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India came forward to support the
children. He promised to send Rs. 10,000/- for supporting the
purchase of Uniform for 42 children and notebooks for 11
children and now he has extended Rs.3000/- more and so we are
planning to get uniforms for 49 children and notebooks for 12
children totally supporting 61 children from various slums.
Madurai’s Local representative, James Rajasekaran informed that
all arrangements have been done for the uniform and notebooks
distribution to take place on 6th August by 5.00 p.m
